Acrylic on canvas.

July 5, 2019:

So stoked when I can find the time to paint a new canvas! This was a commission for the @bobmarley Museum and Mausoleum in 9 Mile, Jamaica! Big thanks to Bob’s brother @richiebookerofficial from @9milemusicfestival for his patience in getting this done and to my friends @intunearts and @rayorraca for mediating this job. I’ve been doing portraits of this hero of mine ever since the early 90s, so I wanted to do something a little bit different. I went for a more “visionary” perspective, showing him at a moment of expressive bliss, and of mystical connection to the source of creation. “God” can be painted in an infinity of ways, and maybe depicting him in his human incarnation as Rastafari (Emperor Selassie I) would of been more fitting. But I felt like stripping away any cultural flavour, as to honestly express my personal vision of the infinite divine. Bob was a shaman that transcended race and culture at the end of the day. Technically speaking, I tried a new approach I’ve been seeing many street artists do these days, where you paint a portrait over an established pattern, so that background comes through the character. I might of gone a tad thick with my layers, making this effect kinda settle, but I like how it turned out. It is really such an honour to contribute a second art piece to that historical Jamaican landmark, where one of my biggest inspirations grew up and now rests.
